Omega Psi Phi was an early African American men's fraternity, originating at Howard University in 1911. The Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi was founded at Penn State in 1921 and was the first black organization on Penn State's campus. This fraternity sponsored the Miss Black Penn State pageant and participated in the Black Male Summit. The Pennsylvania Humanities Council designated the year 1985 as "The Year of the Pennsylvania Writer." The PHC funded projects in eight locations throughout the Commonwealth to gain appreciation, understanding, and recognition for past and present Pennsylvania writers.
